Ballet Palm Beach Presents Sleeping Beauty and Other Works for Mother’s Day

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (April 17, 2017) –  In time for Mother’s Day, Ballet Palm Beach concludes its season with Sleeping Beauty and Other Works at the Eissey Campus Theatre on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, May 7 at 4:00 p.m., and on Mother’s Day, May 14 at 4:00 p.m. This two- hour mixed bill features the retelling of fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, and exciting pieces from Ballet Palm Beach’s diverse repertoire. Tickets begin at $19 and can be purchased online at balletpalmbeach.org or by calling 561.814.5598. Student discounts and group rates are available.

The performance opens with Sleeping Beauty, underscored by Tchaikovsky, which narrates the fate of a kingdom and newborn Princess Aurora cursed by an offended fairy. The fairy tale is re-imagined into an original one-act ballet. “The traditional ballet, Sleeping Beauty, is very long- sometimes running four hours- and can be heavy,” says Artistic Director Colleen Smith. “To avoid this, we’re condensing the story into one hour with a faster-paced plot and adding our unique, whimsical spin on the story.” This will be the second original full-length ballet Smith has choreographed for this season, the first being Snow White in October.

Along with Sleeping Beauty, In the Mood and Saint-Saëns Suite will be presented, both choreographed by Smith. In the Mood is a colorful celebration of Glen Miller’s big band hits. The piece returns to the main stage after being toured in 2013 around Palm Beach County landmarks as Ballet Palm Beach’s first Flash Ballet series, an outreach program that has since brought free ballet performances to thousands of locals. Saint-Saëns Suite, another premiere in this mixed bill, aims to embody Saint-Saëns’ recognizable music while showcasing the versatility and strength of the company dancers.
